They say hindsight is 20/20. Coincidentally, our vision is 20/20 – until it’s not.
According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study, eye injuries account for over 20,000 workplace injuries annually. What’s even more alarming is that over 90% of these could have been prevented with proper eye protection.
“They’re not close by… I’ll just quickly make this cut..”
“I’ll be alright for just this one thing…”
Famous last words.
When I was young, my father would have me hold boards while he made cuts in the garage with his table saw, and I would close my eyes as the saw dust showered my face and arms. No eyewear needed.
Years later, in shop class, a student got a metal sliver in his eye, easily prevented with proper eye protection.
Our vision deteriorates with age, but we have to take care of our eyes while we have our sight intact.
Eye protection is more than stopping debris from getting in. We’re constantly at war with our rods and cones, blasting them with harmful UV rays, bright screens from up close; straining them to see things we cannot easily see.
So why aren’t people wearing proper eyewear? Worksites must adhere to CSA safety and regulatory standards, and be compliant with WCB protocols. The penalties and liabilities they would face, vastly outweigh the cost to supply employees with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Online ordering and replenishment or supplies has never been easier, and the look of the product has never been more professional and sophisticated. The excuses often heard, don’t measure up to the solutions available, and the reasons why eye protection is so important.
